“Did anyone happen to see where Jacob got off to?” Thomas asked as he walked into the hotel room, taking a look at his surroundings. He didn't like it. There were two beds, which would work out fine and dandy, considering he didn't plan to be here much of the time, but that didn't deter him from abhorring the presence of the television on the dresser. He never liked the things; they were a distraction in a world already full of distractions. He had seen many things in his life, but nothing as aggravating as a box in the corner of the living room that swore, cursed, and brought nothing but bad news every hour of every day.

“I saw him run off,” Dorothy offered. “I don't know much beyond that.”

Thomas grunted. “He'd better be back in time for that boat ride,” Thomas said. “And you know what? I don't like this business with just two beds. I'm going to rent another room.”

“Another room?” Dorothy raised an eyebrow as she set the age old suitcase on the wooden floor near the bathroom. “We needn't be spending like that now, Thomas!”

“We need--” Thomas started, but he was interrupted by a knock at the hotel room door. He stopped mid-sentence, walked around Sarah, and pulled the door open, not even thinking to glance through the peephole before he did so. In front of him, standing nervously on the long motel porch stood a well-dressed man who Thomas presumed to be in his early twenties. His hair was evenly cut, and his face did not show signs of the field. Furthermore, he was dressed in a sleek black suit and holding in front of him in both hands, a leather-bound bible.

“Help you?” Thomas asked.

“Hello,” the young man said. “My name is John. I'm taking part in the mission to Amish people this year, and we're trying to help spread the word of Jesus Christ--”

“I'm going to stop you there,” Thomas said, raising his hand as if to silence the man. “This family has already found Jesus.”

“Yes, but--”

“There is no but!” Thomas interrupted the man. “I know my Jesus, and I don't need the one you are selling.”

“Okay, listen,” John said, clutching the bible even tighter. “I...the thing is, I haven't had much luck doing...this, if you know what I mean. I can't get the hang of witnessing door to door like this, and I'm sort of the laughing stock of my church...”

“Perhaps, that is because you are trying to witness to those who are already strong in their faith,” Thomas suggested. “I'd like to invite you to have dinner with my family, then we can talk. Stop by here around five, would you kindly?”

“I...I suppose so,” John said, his hands shaking now. “Thank you!”

“It is my pleasure,” Thomas said, closing the door a bit too quickly. As he did so he heard a distinct shout of pain as the door refused to shut. “Sorry!”

Thomas closed the door and turned to investigate the hotel room.
